N'Dou the right thing

This is a really, really good test for Matthew Hatton - and one that will tell us everything we need to know about him.
Will he be out of his depth? Is he just where he is because he is Ricky Hatton's brother? Or has he got a lot left in this game?
Lovemore N'Dou is the perfect man to answer all these questions. He might be past his very best and a lot will depend on how much he has left, but he is still the gate to world championship level.

He was when Ricky was coming through at light-welterweight and he still is now. He might have lost three of his last four but look at the names: Paul Malignaggi (twice) and Kermit Cintron. They are world-class fighters and with all due respect, above the level Matthew has been boxing at.

N'Dou has also taken world champions like Junior Witter, Miguel Cotto and Zab Judah the distance in his time. If Hatton is to get past him we will need to see him at his very best.

Abilities

At the moment there are two schools of thought for Matthew: one is that he doesn't get enough credit for his own boxing ability and two; he has got the opportunities he has had because he is Ricky's little brother.

I have to say both of them are true - and probably 60 per cent of people would go along with the second one.

But that makes this, as tough as it is, the perfect chance to show us he is a good fighter. He''ll never be a big puncher, but he does have decent boxing abilities as we saw not long ago against Ben Tackie.

That is just the sort of performance he needs here, because N'Dou will do what Tackie does and just walk him down all night long.

Matthew does tend to get too tense and his shoulders lock up and I hope he can relax. And I hope he can stay disciplined as well because I do think he does tend to follow big brother and get over anxious and lose his cool a bit.

Hunger

A lot of fighters have the talent, but they lack the other aspects you need to succeed and the red mist does come down. He is bound to be nervous because he will know he is moving up a level, I just hope he gives himself every opportunity.

Remember when he fought Craig Watson on Ricky's Homecoming bill? He told us all what he was going to do against, with all due respect a decent domestic fighter - how far did he go? - but almost froze. He just couldn't get going.

If he can find something like he did against Tackie he might just pull this off, but a lot depends on what N'Dou has left, if he thinks he can still be a force and if he still has the hunger.

He is a proud, proud man too and I just think he will see this as a chance to lay down a marker again by beating Hatton Jnr.

I would love to see Matthew pull it off because if he did he would move out of Ricky's shadow, distance himself from all that dispel the doubts that will always surround his career.

But I just have a feeling a guy of N'Dou's class and experience will prove too much. I can see this being a long, hard night for Matthew Hatton - and one that ends in disappointment.
